WIA2013 Day 1 Session 2: The Next Generation

Youth entrepreneurship is the next step in ensuring the continued success and social impact of entrepreneurship in any economy. Young people need to view entrepreneurship as a viable means of sustaining themselves and need to be encouraged to step out and create their own business ventures. Youth Participation in nation building is a major focus of this session. The session will further seek to explore the dynamics of the next generation, their readiness to take up leadership role in the private, public and social space, their values and work ethos/ethics as well as their aspiration for Nigeria.

Jonathan Kola is from Nairobi, Kenya. He graduated from Harvard College in 2012 with a BA in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He is the Co-Founder and CTO over Wecyclers Nigeria.

Jonathan Kola, Wecyclers provides a simple, community level solution to Nigeria’s current waste crisis. In Lagos, Nigeria only 13% of recyclable materials are salvaged from landfills. Because of the low salvage rates, recycling plants in Lagos face a chronic supply constraint with one large plant running 50-60% below capacity. Using a fleet of low-cost cargo bicycles, Wecyclers motivates families to recycles plastic bottles, plastic sachets and Aluminium cans. For every kilogram of waste a family recycles with Wecyclers, they receive points which they can redeem for goods such as food items or cell phone minutes. After collection, Wecyclers sells the material to local recycling processes.

Through its business model, Wecyclers effectively bridges the gap between collection and recycling, thereby eliminating the supply constraint on local recycling facilities.
